How we evaluate AVA

AVA runs standardized mobility assessments with a single camera and on-device AI. Each study in this program answers the next question that has to be settled before the tool is trusted in practice.

Our approach

  • 1

    A clinical reference standard

AVA’s results are compared with scoring by physical therapists who administer the CDC STEADI tests by the standard protocol: the Timed Up and Go, the 30-second chair stand, and the 4-stage balance test.

  • 2

    Real community settings

Data are collected in independent-living communities, senior centers and community groups, where lighting, rooms and participants vary, rather than in a lab.

  • 3

    Errors judged by their consequence

Beyond average error, we report whether an error changes a participant’s category and in which direction, so readers can see when a result can be relied on and when it needs a second look.

  • 4

Usability with the people who use it

Self-administered assessment only works if older adults can complete it. We test the app with older adults and publish the problems we find, not just the scores.

Privacy by design

AVA performs pose estimation and movement-event detection entirely on the device, with no wearable sensors, external hardware, or cloud processing of video. There is no facial recognition and no surveillance.

Ethics and responsible use

Each study is reviewed by an independent institutional review board and conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki, with informed consent from every participant. AVA supports mobility awareness and screening. It does not diagnose conditions, replace clinical evaluation, or serve as a standalone clinical decision tool.

How to cite

Each technical report page offers APA, BibTeX and RIS citations and a downloadable .bib or .ris file. Please cite the report page URL. If a report is revised, its page lists the changes.
